Byte-Man and the Professor: Academia

Stats/Facts
  • Recently released “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, whether the MCU should end or not is a debate point for their fans.Otherwise, from a North American or domestic box office point of view, they are still cash cows. In the film industry, the movie markets of both the U.S. and Canada are known as the North American box office, or as the domestic box office within the U.S. itself. Taking inspiration from the Hollywood box office market for this article only, consider North American means either from the US or Canada.
  • In 2014, Brown University found some interesting facts when they analyzed the dataset of all professors in 50 top US Computer Science Graduate Programs.

They continue to keep their dataset up-to-date and the current dataset includes the Computer Science (CS) Professors of Top North American universities (the US & Canada). The latest dataset can be found at the link below.

Inspired by both events, I have titled this article “Byte-Man and the Professor: Academia” which is based on the study of the CS professors dataset by Brown university(as of February 2023). It isn’t a complete database, still very useful to study. I have also generalized the provided dataset as per my knowledge. For example, if some professors studied at VJTI, Mumbai which is affiliated to University of Mumbai then some entries are indicating VJTI, Mumbai while some are indicating University of Mumbai. So, I generalized all those entries as University of Mumbai.

Bachelors vs PhDs

For an academic career, a general perception is to do a PhD from the country where you want to become a professor. The PhD pursuing place or guide matters more than the Bachelor’s degree pursuing place. This data validates this (at least for the Computer Science academic field). The undergraduates from IITs or Tsinghua/Peking university are the biggest feeders to the CS faculties of top North American universities but most of them have done their PhDs from the North American universities later on.

Bachelor’s degree

  1. Collectively IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are the biggest feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities. About 5.7% CS faculties (303 of 5356) at top North American universities did an undergraduation from any one of IITs.
  2. MIT is the biggest single institute or university as a feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.
  3. From North America, the University of California system is the second biggest feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.
  4. Outside North America, Tsinghua University is the biggest single institute or university as a feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.

PhD degree

  1. Collectively, the University of California system is the biggest feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities. About 11.1% CS faculties (593 of 5356) at top North American universities did a PhD from any of UCs.
  2. MIT is the biggest single institute or university as a feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.
  3. From Asia; Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel is the biggest feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.
  4. From India, IISc. Bangalore is the biggest single institute or university as a feeder to the CS faculties of top North American universities.

Short Summary
If your ultimate goal is to work in the Computer Science academia of the US, then it’s advisable to pursue a PhD from the US.
