Fortune Global 500 list has always been dominated by US, China, Japan, France, Germany, UK, South Korea, Switzerland, Canada and Netherlands throughout the decade (2009-2019). In fact, year 2009 & year 2019 both lists contain the same counties in top 10. The countries that top the charts from 2009 to 2019 are the same except for 2010 in which Italy replaced South Korea. United States tops the chart throughout the decade. China has replaced Japan for the 2nd place since 2012 and Japan is holding 3rd position after that. 4th, 5th and 6th positions are shared among Germany, Britain and France throughout the decade. Except 2010, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th position is shared among South Korea, Switzerland, Canada and Netherlands throughout the decade. In 2010, Italy secured 9th position sharing with Canada placing South Korea on 11th position.
China is the biggest gainer by increasing the number of companies’ presence each year throughout the decade. Russia suffers the biggest drop from 8 (in 2009) to 4 (in 2019), decreased by 50%. UK is the second biggest number drop experienced country, from 30 (peak in 2011) to 16 (in 2019), decreased by 46.67%. The number of Indian companies remains mostly constant throughout 2009-2019.
(Note*: For year 2012, 2011, 2010 & 2009 Fortune Global 500 is showing details of only 479, 478, 478 & 477 companies on the website. I have already sent an email to them but still haven’t received a reply. (One possible assumption could be because of merger or bankruptcy of the companies due to the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis 2008.) )
