Power of data to improve the university system

Study

Data analytics in higher education plays a significant role when it comes to tracking trends that could help to improve our university system. Let’s focus on the number of affiliated colleges of the university.

Short summary :

“No collegiate university in India should have more than 100 affiliated colleges. “

Analysis :

No world class university has greater than two-digit numbers affiliated colleges. Let’s take some example from the UK, France, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea etc.

University of Cambridge is composed of 31 colleges; while University of Oxford has 44 colleges. Australian National University has seven academic colleges while University of Melbourne has 11 colleges. University of Toronto has 11 colleges and Université PSL also has 11 colleges. Seoul National University has 15 undergraduate &12 graduate colleges while University of Tokyo has 15 graduate colleges.

Now in India:
Mumbai University has 750+ colleges. Savitribai Phule Pune University has 700+ colleges. Anna University has 550+ colleges and that too engineering. Obviously, administrative works can’t be done efficiently with that number of colleges. I would suggest to offload this burden by creating more efficient cluster universities from big state-level universities. Keeping in mind that India has the world’s largest youth population I would prefer 100 colleges rather 50 for creating new cluster universities. So, each university will have less than 100 affiliated colleges. It will help both home and cluster universities to grow as administrative work & curriculum updation can be done more efficiently due to the tasks are divided within a limited number of colleges(<100).
